Nampula City: A Modern Handwritten Font for Creative Branding Projects

Opening the Brand Board: First Impressions of Nampula City

I recently started working on a visual refresh for a small artisanal coffee shop, and one of the first decisions was choosing a font that felt warm, personal, and a little playful. I opened my brand board in Photoshop and dropped in Nampula City as a test for the logo concept. Right away, it stood out—not too loose, not too stiff. It has that modern handwritten charm that feels authentic without being overly casual. As someone who’s worked with dozens of script fonts over the years, this one caught my attention for how it balances cuteness with clarity.

Visual Personality: Clean, Cute, and Contemporary

Nampula City falls into the Script Amp category, and it definitely leans toward the modern end of the handwritten font spectrum. It's not a wild, flowing script with dramatic swashes—it’s more restrained and deliberate. The letterforms have a slight bounce and organic texture, giving it that “handwritten” feel without sacrificing legibility. The font has a friendly, approachable personality that works well for brands wanting to feel personable and creative.

It comes in a single weight, but its contrast and spacing give it enough visual presence to work as a display font. It’s not ideal for body copy, especially in print or long-form digital content, but as a headline or accent font, it shines. The lowercase letters are fairly consistent in height, which helps maintain a clean look when used in wordmarks or short brand phrases.

Testing Across Brand Touchpoints

I used Nampula City across several brand elements to see how it held up:

Overall, it performed best in short, impactful uses. It’s clearly designed as a display font, and trying to use it in longer paragraphs or at very small print sizes would compromise readability.

When Nampula City Works—and When It Doesn’t

As a brand designer, I’d recommend Nampula City for projects that benefit from a modern, cute, and slightly whimsical tone. It’s great for:

However, it’s not suited for:

It’s important to test the font in context. For example, on a chalkboard-style menu board or printed label, you may need to adjust letter spacing or use a bolder backup font for clarity.

Pairing Nampula City with Other Fonts

One of the joys of working with display fonts like Nampula City is figuring out how to pair them effectively. Since it has a soft, organic texture, I found it worked best with more structured typefaces:

The key is to let Nampula City be the visual highlight while supporting it with fonts that offer structure and readability. Avoid pairing it with other overly decorative typefaces, which can create visual noise.

What to Check Before Finalizing

Before using Nampula City in a client project, especially for packaging, merchandise, or web use, always verify the font’s licensing terms. Many free or premium fonts are not cleared for commercial use in all contexts. You’ll want to ensure the license covers:

Also, check if the font package includes alternate characters, ligatures, or stylistic sets that could enhance your design. Nampula City is a display font, so having a few extra glyphs or variations can help customize the look for different applications.
